Cambodia (FIRST TRIP) is the last leg of my journey through South East Asia and a real eye opener. I was surprised at much that I found in this magical land and a part of me is still their. Cambodia's civil war started in 1975 and lasted until 1998, the country is just starting to come together after so many years of war. I will be exploring Cambodia from a central location at Siem Reap.
Coming into Siem Reap it is obvious that Cambodia is truly a jungle.
First stop, the entrance to the ruins at Angkor Thom.
Angkor Thom is the last capital of the Khmer Dynasty that was rebuilt by the king Jayavarman VII (1181-1219). The city of Angkor Thom - means Big City in Khmer - consists of a square and each side of which about three kilometer long. It located 1,700 meters north of Angkor Wat.
A directory of the city.
As you will see from this, and pictures to come, Cambodian ruins at Angkor are highly ornate.
Over 1 million people live within the walls of Angkor Thom at the same time the population of London was approximately 30,000.
Every inch of the walls are decorated.
The reliefs are still beautiful after all these centuries.
On the upper level there are over 200 large faces of King Avalokitesvara carved on the 54 towers. The faces with smiles seem to follow the traveler.
More reliefs.
Temple at Angkor Thom.
Still touring Angkor Thom.
Lunch.
Please wait, movie loading. The famous Angkor Wat.
Preparing to enter Angkor Wat built in the 9th century by king Jayavarman VII.
Crossing the moat to Angkor Wat.
The crossing on the right has been restored and work is underway on the left hand side. The moat surrounding Angkor Wat is over two football fields in width.
After crossing the moat and entering the walls of Angkor Wat we can see the temple in the center. The outer wall surrounding Angkor Wat is over 2 miles in length.
Still heading toward the temple.
