We begin our trip to Egypt with a 4 day stay in Cairo on our own. Then we will join a tour with 7 others from Australia and Canada. We will use planes, trains, boats and buses to explore this fascinating country.
We arrive Cairo in the evening at the Ramses Hilton located in the center of Cairo along the Nile. The hotel has upgraded us to a mini suite on the 18th floor with beautiful views of the Nile and City Center.
Cairo is a 24 hour city with plenty of traffic. The view from our room is magnificent. Party boats on the Nile and one of the numerous bridges over the river.
Please wait while movie loads.
The morning reveals a different scene of the city. Notice the pyramids in the distance.
Out the other side of our room the view is directly over the Egyptian Museum and immediately beyond it Tahrir Square. We will visit it today after breakfast.
We were last here in 2011 at the beginning of the Arab Spring and the uprising in Tahrir Square following the ousting of President Hosni Mubarak. The atmosphere then was different and we had to leave without seeing the rest of the country.
Now we are back at Tahrir Square in 2016 and things are much quieter. Gatherings are not even allowed in the Square and police presence is everywhere.
A beautiful mosque overlooking the Square.
In the background is the Cairo Tower, supposedly one of Egypts most well known landmarks. The lion is the entrance to another bridge across the Nile.
We hail a cab and make it across town to Coptic Cairo, the Christian sector in this city of 20 million.
Lovely streets and plenty of shops in Coptic Cairo.
Very clean and well kept. We have noticed, and so will you throughout this trip, that there is a significant loss of tourist trade in Egypt at this time.
A mosaic of St. George the Dragon Slayer in the Convent of St. George.
An interesting poster of the Coptic Christian religion from inception at the top to modern day at the bottom.
The abode of the Coptic nuns in the Convent of St. George.
A sarcophagus holding the bones of a saint.
The Church of St. George, which is a Greek Orthodox Church, is one of the most beautiful in the Coptic Christian area of Cairo.
The church is beautiful and well kept both inside and outside.
The domed church ceiling where the peaceful image of Christ looks down upon you.
