This trip was inspired by Michael Palens book and 6 hour BBC series “Himalaya”. After acclimating in Leh and Alchi for 5 days we began our journey from Leh to Manali and pass through 4 of the highest passes in the world with the highest being 17,480 feet at Tanglang La. After our stay in Amristar we will be off to Dal Lake and Kashmir for an additional 3 night stay.
This map may help in visualizing where the Jammu and Kashmir region is in India. Some of the areas are disputed by Pakistan and China.
Leaving beautiful Southern California on the first leg of our journey.
Twenty five hours later we begin our final approach to Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi.
Next morning our tour of the sights of Delhi, India, begin. Today it is about 105 degrees in Delhi.
Typical street scene as we head of to a large market.
The market is large so we take a rickshaw ride.
PLEASE WAIT, MOVIE LOADING.
This guy does really well considering the 105 degree heat.
I have always been fascinated by the electrical grid infrastructure in India. It is kind of like India itself, controlled chaos.
PLEASE WAIT, MOVIE LOADING.
After our rickshaw ride and some time in the market place we are off by bus to our next destination.
Along the way we pass the famous Red Fort which today houses a number of museums.
Gandhi pops up in the strangest places.
A stop to visit Humayuns Tomb.
As with many Mughal tombs, you must pass through a number of archways before you actually reach your destination. The grounds are beautiful.
Made it. Humayuns first wife, Bega Begum, designed and built this tomb and grounds after Humayuns death.
Humayuns tomb.
Humayuns wife and daughters.
After a day of touring Delhi we order a typical Indian dinner called a thali and a sweet lassi to drink. A little bit of everything.
Following our short stay in Delhi we are off to the airport at 2:30 am to catch our flight to Leh and begin our journey.
The Himalayas are awesome and we can not help but think that we will be right in the midst of them before too long.
