We actually started our trip with three days in Jakarta (not seen on this map), then flew to Yogyakarta to start the trip you see here. Total time spent on this leg of the trip was 18 days and then it was off to Maylasia. We hope you enjoy the album as much as we enjoyed this leg of the trip.
Bags packed and ready for about 23 hours of airflights and airports. Its LAX to Taipei then off to Jakarta, Indonesia.
We have a system. On the first long leg (10 to 14 hours) dinner is served within the first two hours then, thanks to a combination of drugs and alcohol, we cosy up and go to sleep for about eight hours and arise with the smell of coffee and breakfast before landing.
Just finished breakfast and arriving in Taipei, Taiwan.
With a couple of hours to wait for our next flight, we check out the airport and enjoy photo ops.
In the duty free shop its interesting to see that cartons of cigarettes all have very disgusting pictures of the side effects of tobacco on the cartons.
Leaving Taipei I notice a beautiful bridge below us.
Arriving in Jakarta I can see the signs of humidity and temperature outside.
Jakarta is a modern metropolitan city of 24 million residents. Indonesia, with its population of 225 million makes it the most populous Muslim nation on earth.
We are in the tropics so we will surely find durian fruit, which is foul smelling. Some consider it inedible and it is banned from most establishments.
PLEASE WAIT, MOVIE LOADING. Our first foray into getting food in this part of the world is a small restaurant (warung). Its a point and eat kind of thing.
There is no lack of night life here, street hawkers set up early and there are plenty of meals to choose from for well under one dollar.
Fish is popular in Indonesia and I guess you could characterize this as a Happy Meal.
Its pouring rain and we choose our hawker stand to eat. Notice the guy pushing up on the tarp in order to get the water out of the roof.
Yum! Plenty of noodles, vegetables and beefball soup.
Next morning we are off to visit Little Barrys school house by bajai, also known as tuktuks in other parts of Asia.
We finally find the school where Obama took his elementary lessons.
A statue of Obama (Little Barry) as a little boy is at the front entrance.
A plaque for Obama next to the statue.
We take a walk around Menteng section of town, the area near the school, and come across this beautiful park.
